De cómo las orquídeas obtuvieron sus nombres - Gongora
This genus was established in 1794 by the Spanish botanists Hipólito Ruiz López and José Pavón, who collected the first Gongora during the Botanical Expedition to the Viceroyalty of Peru, which began in 1777 and continued until 1811. At that time, the Viceroyalty of Peru comprised the current territories of Peru and northern Chile.
